The team is pleased to announce the arrival of two new cars for 2010, and a welcome return for an old face.
Graham Gibbs, who was part of the original Teamwoodspeed line-up along with current member Dave Woodford, has finally confirmed rumours of a return to the special stages by acquiring a 230bhp Peugeot 205. Currently undergoing a gearbox rebuild, the car will be out in anger next season and Graham is excited about getting behind the wheel:
“I’ve been saying that I’ll do this for a while now, but it’s finally time to bite the bullet and do it. I’m really pleased with the car, and I’m looking forward to shaking it down in the new year.”
Graham looks set to be partnered by stepson Rob Young, who will swap his designer job in London at the weekends for a stage map and a race suit. It certainly wont be dull – Graham had a name for driving a rally car quickly, a name which has stuck among those who still remember his exploits. Rally driving is very much like riding a bike. Or so we’re told.
Also joining the Teamwoodspeed service area for 2010 is the Woodford brothers’ replacement for the Ford Rally Ka that saw them make their debut together in 2009. Another machine born of the land of garlic and frogs legs, the pair will take to the stages next year in a Citroen Saxo VTS.
The Saxo is a fully internationally homologated rally car, currently running to Group N spec. Competing in the 1600 class with a production spec car will still be a challenge, but one that Paul is keen to tackle:
“After selling the Ka, we wanted to move up to a quicker car that has plenty of off-the-shelf rally bits available for it. The Saxo is essentially a 106 GTI with weekend clothes on, so we’ll be spoilt for choice when we come to develop the car. For now though, we want to get used to it and get some more experience under our belts before getting too carried away!”
Although plans for the season are yet to be confirmed, the two crews are discussing plans for an assault on the ANCC Multi-surface Championship. We’ll also be bringing you more details of the two new rally cars, but in the meantime we’ll leave you with some teasers…
